What to Expect In Pokemon Go Community Days

Pokemon Go Community Day Guide
Community Days in Pokemon Go typically last for 3 hours and take place once each month, on a Saturday or a Sunday.  These days offer opportunities to play the game with friends or meet new people - at least in the pre-COVID-19 world.  As one COVID-19 accommodation, recent Community Days have lasted 6 hours instead of the usual 3 hours due to social distancing.

Don't depend on extended time and check here to confirm how long the event will last.

But even with social distancing you can get real in-game benefits:
  • Event Pokemon spawns - you'll find literally hundreds of the featured Pokémon during the 3 hours of the event.  So catch as many as you can!  Each month a different type of Pokemon is featured.
  • More Shiny versions of the event Pokemon - about 5%-10% of the special event Pokemon will be shiny versions. This is significantly more than at other times, and offers the best opportunity to get shinies.
    • You will not be able to tell if a Pokemon is shiny until you tap on it and catch it. So catch as many as you can and you will have a good chance of getting a few shinies during the event.
  • A special move. which the featured event Pokemon learns if you FULLY evolve it within the given time of the Community Day.  These event exclusive moves are usually the most powerful move for the Pokemon, so you want to get this special move during the event!
  • Aditional bonuses:  at least one of these special event bonuses appears for each Community Day event:
    • double candy
    • triple stardust
    • three-hour incense
    • 3x XP for every caught Pokemon
    • 3-4x egg hatch speed.
  • Event Special Tasks.  Typically these are special research tasks themed around catching the event featured Pokemon.
  • Lures Last 3 Hours. During the Community Day event, lures last a full 3 hours.
  • Event special photo bomb - when taking pictures.
  • Special Research Story - for $1 (or local currency equivalent) - usually including stardust and other items.
  • Community Day Box in Store
  • Global Friendship:  Many Pokemon Go trainers view Community Days as something that brings the whole world together.  After all, millions of people globally are playing at the same time, having fun, and getting the great benefits.  You can make new friends or reinforce old rivalries with other players. But the major goal is to catch lots and lots of the Community Day Pokemon!

Advanced Tip: Prepare for the Community Day

The early phase begins before the Community Day even begins in your Pokemon Go app.  During the event, you will be catching dozens or hundreds of the special event Pokemon.  So, in the days before the event begins do the following to prepare for it:

Clean Out your Pokemon Bag!

Before the day starts, you should either enlarge your bag, or transfer out all your unwanted excess Pokemon to make space for the new ones that you catch during the event.  You still will need to empty out the weaker and unwanted event Pokemon during the event, because you still probably will fill it up all the way.  However, the more space you make in advance, the less you will have to do emptying out your bag during the event.  During the event, you'll be busy with other things, so this will eliminate one unwanted distraction.

Get Pokeballs and Berries.  You Will Need Lots of them During the Event

Stack up on items such as poke balls, berries (especially pinap berries for up to 12 extra candies during a double candy event), and lucky eggs. Star pierces, lures, incenses, and incubators provide exceptional value in addition to event-specific bonuses. Always make sure to have enough to last the entire event.

I like to have as many ultra balls as possible, since they make catching the featured Pokemon so much quicker!

Get Lures

Using lures can make it a lot easier to catch more of the event Pokemon.  So, many people like to stock up on lures and use them during the Community Day.

Get Incense

Incense are like lures but they allow you to attract more Pokemon wherever you are.  These increased spawn rates from incense can help a lot, especially if you are playing from home due to social distancing.  All you'll need are one or two incense for a Community Day.  You can get them in the shop or in various in-game activities like leaving one or more of your Pokemon in a gym.

COVID-19 Community Day Preparation Tips

We can't ignore the big elephant in the room!  If COVID-19 is still a concern in your area, be sure to bring along your pandemic supplies, like your hand sanitizers and a face mask!

Tip:  Event Beginning Strategy

  • Catch A lot of the Featured Pokemon!
For the first two hours of a 3-hour Community Day event, you want to focus on catching as many of the event Pokemon as you can.  For an extended 6-hour Community day, you should do this for the first 5 hours, or until you decide you have played long enough.

  • Transfer Weaker Pokemon to the Professor to Keep some space in your bag.
You should transfer in the weaker Pokemon that you do not want to save during this period, and accumulate candies.
  • Save Special Items Until After The Event Starts
Do not activate any special items such as incenses and lures before the start of the event, as you might receive extra bonuses for using special items during the event.  So save your items for after the event has started.

You also can spin Pokestops and Gyms to get more pokeballs as you go on.

Tip:  Last Hour Community Day Strategy

  • Make Sure You Have Enough Candies:  If you have already played for 2 hours, go through your Pokemon bag and see if you have accumulated enough of the event Pokemon's candies to evolve and power up the evolved Pokemon.  If you do not yet have enough, catch more!  Keep that up until you have enough.  My strategy usually is to keep catching the event Pokemon up to about 20 minutes before the end, if I still have the time available to play, and am having fun.  After all, you can never have to much candy!
  • Mark the event Pokemon you will want to evolve, in order to get the powerful exclusive special move available during the event.
  • Evolve the best of the Community Day special event Pokemon!  I like to do this before the end of the event to be safe, but it is possible to do the evolution for up to two hours afterwards and still get the special move set for the evolved Pokemon.

August 2020 - Featuring Magicarp

The August 2020 Community Day takes place on August 8 and lasts 6 hours. The featured Pokemon is Magikarp. Magikarp is a particularly useless orange fish that  flops around on your screen.  However, Magicarp evolves into Gyarados, who is one of my favorite Pokemon.

If you evolve a Magicarp into Gyarados during the event, your new Gyardos will get the Aqua Tail special move.  So, if you’re looking to add a powerful water type attacker to your roster, now is your chance.  The Aqua Tail move requires very low energy, making this special Gyardos terrific for the Go Battle League - in the Ultra and Master Leagues.

August 2020 Community Day Features:

  • Event Date:  August 8, 2020.
  • Event time:  6 hours, running 11 AM to 5 PM local time.
  • Featuring Magicarp.
  • Evolves into Gyardos.
  • Featured exclusive special move: Aqua Tail.
  • Extra time to evolve and get special move: 2 hours - until 7 PM
  • Surprise photo bomb when taking pictures.
  • Community Day Box in Store  with:
    •  30 Ultra Balls
    • Elite Charged TM
    • 6 star pieces
    • 1 incense.

    • 3-hour incense (instead of the usual 30 minutes).
